«Finally, it is time to talk about the sweet white wines of Bergerac. This is a great specialty of this region, offering a full range from semi-sweet to full sweet. But let's start the presentation:
The Côtes de Bergerac White
These semi-sweet wines combine a brilliant straw color and roundness on the palate with fresh flavour. They are at their prime when young.
The AOC Rosette:
With a pale straw colour, good balance and a round, supple flavour, the Rosette is a semi-sweet white wine of great distinction.
Both Montravel appellations: Côtes de Montravel and Haut Montravel:
With beautiful aromatic complexity, these sweet, concentrated wines have excellent aging potential.
The Côtes de Montravel are harvested very ripe and matured for 12 to 18 months. They are slightly sweet drawing a perfect transition between Montravel and Haut Montravel. They are wonderful as an aperitif or paired with fish in sauce.
Then Saussignac:
An exceptional dessert wine, the Saussignac comes from noble rot grapes, harvested by hand with successive passes through the vineyard to select the grapes at the perfect moment. Concentration and complexity are enhanced by a lovely freshness. Saussignac winemakers are the only ones in France to commit to producing this type of wine without chaptalisation (adding of sugar in the winemaking process) !
Finally, the thirteenth title: Monbazillac, the largest dessert wine appellation in the world!
Harvested by successive handpicking and sorting, Monbazillac is a very elegant dessert wine, which reveals a powerful bouquet with hints of honey, acacia and spices. These wines can improve with cellaring.
My tasting tips :
The soft and sweet Bergerac * aperitif, white meats, blue cheese, strawberries, fruit desserts, chicken tagine, veal stew, Asian cuisine.
The Saussignac and Monbazillac * foie gras, melon, fish sauce, blue cheese, pies and fruit salads, fruit white. As an aperitif with dried fruits (figs, apricots) and walnuts or hazelnuts to nibble.
